I am a Thai buffalo who drags the plough in the paddy field
ไม่ส่งเสียงไม่พูดไม่จา งานหนักงานเบาช่วยชาวนาทำ
mâi sòng sĭang mâi-pôot-mâi-jaa ngaan nàk ngaan bao chûay chaao naa tam
Not making a sound, not speaking or saying anything. [Whether] hard work [or] easy work, helping the farmer do [it]
ตากแดดตากฝน ไม่เคยร้องบ่นสักคำ
dtàak dàet dtàak fŏn mâi koie róng bòn sàk kam
Exposed to sun, exposed to rain, never one word of complaint
คนยังค่อนฉันเป็นประจำ ใครเงียบงึมงำ บอกโง่เหมือนควาย
kon yang kôn chăn bpen bprà-jam krai ngîap ngeum-ngam bòk ngôh mĕuan kwaai
People still grouse about me regularly. Someone quietly mutters saying “stupid as a buffalo”

จะชอบจะชังจะชู้จะเชย ยังเอ่ยถึงเรา
jà chôp jà chang jà chóo jà choie yang òie tĕung rao
Will you like, hate, be affectionate . . . how will you talk about me?
ถูกนอกใจคือถูกสวมเขา เอาเขาของฉันไปสวมทำไม
tòok nôk jai keu tòok sŭam kăo ao kăo kŏng chăn bpai sŭam tam-mai
To be treated unfaithfully is to be worn by that person [as a piece of clothing]. Why take my horns and go wear them?
ไม่ชอบหน้ากัน ก็เลยด่ามันไอ้ควาย
mâi chôp nâa gan gôr loie dàa man âi kwaai
If you can’t stand the other person’s face,* you curse the person with “You buffalo!”
หมูแมวหมีมันดียังไง ควายผิดตรงไหนไม่เข้าใจเลย
mŏo maew mĕe man dee yang ngai kwaai pìt dtrong năi mâi kâo jai loie
How is it that the pig, cat, and bear are good? What did the buffalo do wrong? [I] don’t understand at all!

**อยู่กับคนมาชั่วนาตาปี
yòo gàp kon maa chûa naa dtaa bpee
[We] have been living with people for forever now
มีศักดิ์มีศรีร่วมกู้ชาติมาแล้วพ่อเอ๋ย

[We]’ve had success joining together to save the nation, oh Father.

In the end, the buffalo horns still reveal a secret for us to think about: when life returns [to where it came from]. **

แมงจีนูนแมงวันแมงหวี่มาบินตามให้ความเหงาคลาย
maeng jee noon maeng wan maeng wèe maa bin dtom dtaam hâi kwaam ngăo klaai
flies and beetles swarming around to relieve loneliness.
เจ้าเอี้ยงเพื่อนรักก็ยังมาทักมาทาย
jâo îang pêuan rák gôr yang maa ták maa taai
You, Cowbird, my dear friend, still come to greet [me]***
หิวหรืออิ่มควายยิ้มสบาย เคี้ยวเอื้องเรื่อยไป เป็นควาย
hĭw rĕu ìm kwaai yím sà-baai kíeow-êuang rêuay bpai bpen kwaai sĭa yàang
Hungry or full, the buffalo smiles contentedly, continuing to chew the cud. Am a buffalo in every way
เกิดมาเป็นทุย ฟังแต่ขลุ่ยผิวทุกวันและคืน
gèrt maa bpen tui fang dtàe klùi pĭw túk wan láe keun
I was born a buffalo. Listen to the bamboo flute every day and night
อยากฟังเสียงเพลงเสียงอื่น นั่นคือเสียงซอที่ควายอยากฟัง
yàak fang sĭang playng sĭang èun · nân keu sĭang sor têe kwaai yàak fang
I want to listen to another sound. It’s the sound of the fiddle/ that buffalos like to hear
