เอี้ยงโครง โยงหลังควายเฒ่า
A black-collared starling stands on the back of the old buffalo
คอยเฝ้าจับแมลง…ริ้น เหลือบไร
Keeps watch catching insects . . . knats, horseflies, fleas
เจ้าเอี้ยงบินมาจากรวงรัง หนทางยังคงไม่ไกล
The starling flies here from the nest, not a long ways away
มุ่งไป…สู่ฝูง ควายที่ไถนา
Straight away . . . towards the group of buffalo that plow the field

ถึกควายทุย ลุยไถนาข้าว
Tuk, the buffalo with short twisted horns. Wading along plowing the rice field
แต่เช้า อาบเหงื่อนองท่วมท้องนา
dtàe cháo àap ngèua nong tûam tóng naa
since morning bathed in sweat which floods the paddy field
หมู่แมลง รุนล้อมตอนต่อติดหนังตา
A group of bugs swarms the eyelids
เอี้ยงไขว่คว้าจับตามอง จ้องจับกิน
The cowbird clutches on, observing intently, staring to catch and eat.

สองเพื่อนสองพันธุ์ช่วยกันทํากิน
Two friends, two species, helping each other make a living
นกเอี้ยงโผบินควายเฒ่าก้าวเดิน
The starling hovers, the old buffalo walks along.
ทุยเอ๋ยเจ้าเคยแต่ไถนาข้าว
Buffalo, oh, you only ever plowed the rice field
ทุยเจ้าทําผิดฉันใด มาจากไกลไม่อาวรณ์
Buffalo, in what way did you do anything wrong?! Coming from afar without clinging [dying abruptly]

Starling, oh, you used to take care of the old buffalo
