Note: The word “บ้านนา”(“Baan Na”) of the title, breaks down into the words “house-field”.  Together it means “farm” or “farmhouse” However “Baan Na” is also a common name for a town in the countryside.

จำใจมา หาเงินทอง
jam-jai maa hăa ngern tong
[They] reluctantly come looking for money
เลี้ยงปากเลี้ยงท้อง
líang bpàak líang tóng
To provide for*
พี่น้องในบ้านนา
pêe nóng nai bâan naa
[their] brothers and sisters in Baan Na
มุ่งสู่เมืองกรุง หลั่งไหลกันมา

Men and women wish to say their farewells
เข้าฤดู ทำนา

As it comes to the season of working the fields
ขอคืนถิ่น ดินเดิม ..
kŏr keun tìn din derm ..
[They] ask to return to their former land

หนึ่งฤ-ดูกาล หว่านไถ ปักดำ
nèung réu-doo gaan wàan tăi bpàk dam
One season, sowing, plowing, and transplanting rice seedlings**
อีสาน ชุ่มฉ่ำ มีน้ำท่า เจิ่งนอง
ee săan chûm chàm mee nám tâa jèrng nong
Isaan is moist, inundated with water
มีข้าว ในนา หมู่ปลา เต็มหนอง
mee kâao nai naa mòo bplaa dtem nŏng
There is rice in the fields, there are fish in the water***
หนุ่ม ๆ คึกคะนอง
nùm nùm kéuk ká-nong
Young men are high-spirited
ผู้สาวก็ออก ร่ายรำ
pôo săao gôr òk râai ram
The women also go out and dance
..ยามฝน เหือด ฟ้า
.. yaam fŏn hèuat fáa
. . . In the times that the rain dries up from the sky
สวรรค์นา เหือดหาย
sà-wăn naa hèuat hăai
The heaven of the farm dries up and vanishes.
วันคืน ผ่านไป
wan keun pàan bpai
Days and nights pass
ไม่มี สิทธิ์ทำนา
mâi mee sìt tam naa
They don’t have the opportunity of farming.
คืนสู่ เมืองกรุง ไปรับ จ้าง กันดีกว่า
keun sòo meuang grung bpai ráp jâang gan dee gwàa
Return to the capital and get hired, that would be better.
ทิ้งสวรรค์ บ้านนา
tíng sà-wăn bâan naa
Abandon the Heaven of Ban Na
ให้ผู้เฒ่า เฝ้าคอย
hâi pôo tâo fâo koi
Have the old people wait and watch over it

*เลี้ยงปากเลี้ยงท้อง literally means to provide for the mouth[s] and stomach[s]
**ดำ refers to ดำนา, which means to transplant rice seedlings
***There is rice in the fields, there are fish in the water, is a saying about how great it is in Thailand.
