Note: There is now a SINGABLE ENGLISH TRANSLATION as well. I wanted to call this song “Fast Friends” meaning the friend you meant and instantly are friends with forever. But my helper insisted otherwise. The title ผ่านพบที่ผูกพัน (the encounter that is a lasting connection) doesn’t actually specify a connection with a person. It could be a moment of connecting with nature or the universe in the Buddhist sense. However in the second verse a connection with a person is mentioned . .. maybe only as one example. For a song about “best friends forever”, check out สัญญาใจ Sanya Jai (Promise the Heart). For a song about bonding with nature, see กระเสียว Krasiao.* This video is from a the YouTube station Carabao Secret Studio, which highlights “hidden gems” by Carabao or Add Carabao, like this song.

chûa chee-wít têe gèrt maa yîng doo yîng kláai lá-kon bàek kwaam rák kwaam fài făn kâam fáa poo kăo tá-lay
As life goes along, the more you look, the more it resembles a soap opera. Shoulder love, shoulder struggle. Cross the sky, mountain, and sea.
sùan yài nán kwaam pìt wăng pàan póp dtàe kwaam lóm lĕo piang sùan nói máe nèung dieow sŏm dang jai dâai gôr por
For the most part, it’s disappointment, experiencing only failure. If just sometimes, or only once, something fulfills your expectations, it’s enough
prór chee-wít nán sân nák … pàan póp láew plan pàan bpai …
Because life is short. You encounter [something], and instantly it passes
dtàe àat lŏng lĕua ríw roi … făng léuk nai kwaam song jam …
But it’s likely to leave furrows, buried deep in the memory.
koie mee bâang máai krai nŏr … pàan póp láew plan pòok pan …
Do you ever sometimes have someone . . . you meet and are instantly bonded?
máe keun wan făn bpai gôr mâi leum … pàan póp têe pòok pan
Even the day and night you dream away and don’t forget . . . . the encounter that is a lasting connection

têuak nám kăeng hì-maa-lai lá-laai lăi long tá-lay chee-wít née chàyk chên nán rêrm láew má-laai hăai bpai
Himilayan glaciers melting and flowing down to sea. This life is like that: it begins then dies and disappears.
dtàe kwaam rák glàp mân kong gèrt bpen dtam naan kăan kàp tûang-tam-nong sùk-túk bpon rá-kon dûay kwaam pòok pan
But love on the other hand is secure, arising as a legend calling out [a song in an old style**]—a melody of happiness mixed with suffering mixed with relationships/strong connections.
prór chee-wít nán sân nák … pàan póp láew plan pàan bpai …
Because life is short. Encountering [something], it shortly passes
dtàe àat lŏng lĕua ríw roi … făng léuk nai kwaam song jam …
But it’s likely to leave furrows, buried deep in the memory.
koie mee bâang máai krai nŏr … pàan póp láew plan pòok pan …
Do you ever sometimes have someone . . . you meet and are instantly bonded?
máe keun wan făn bpai gôr mâi leum … pàan póp têe pòok pan
Even day and night you dream away and don’t forget . . . . the encounter that leaves a lasting connection

têe têe rao dîn ron sùt táai máe tĕung têe gào têe têe rao yang dern yang dee têe mee kwaam rák
In the place we struggle (even if in the end, we arrive at the same place as before) – in the place we yet walk, it’s still good to have love
têe wâa sùk-túk bpon gôr piang kâe u-bpà-sàk têe lam-bàak mák jer pàan póp têe pòok pan
This mix of happiness and suffering is only an obstacle. In difficult places one is likely to come across the encounter that leaves a lasting connection

* After I wrote this intro, I found a video in which Add introduces the song. It confirms our interpretation. He says (according to my unchecked translation): “In this life of ours, we are born alone and die alone. Maybe there are some times—some times or some people who give rise to a feeling of awe or being impressed, never to be forgotten. You might take it and turn it into lyrics or poems or compose a song. Or some people will go create movie or a TV drama. I believe all of us have something like this that comes our way. It’s not necessary to tell anyone. Keep it to yourself in your heart, know of it yourself, and you’ll be happy just you yourself. If you do this, you’ll feel good. But if you tell someone, nobody will criticize.”
**The way in which it calls out a tune is very specific. It is a song presented in this manner with these clacking sticks.
