I muse to myself that the life that I’ve used up to this point
Forget the cost! I won’t be beaten [I don’t lose to anyone]
Both hot and cold; both happiness and pain and suffering
Have come already and passed on by

I’m not indebted to [my] youthful period, all hectic
Because what is passed is determination. [I’]ve learned and know right and wrong
From a life of difficult experience, risks taken on a whim
It’s good that I didn’t die from it along the way.

I muse to myself that I’m an old person, and that’s appropriate
I used to be younger than this:
A young person, never before aged
But, an old person, I currently am . . .

When I was a young man, I devoted myself to using that the days that passed, hot and cold
In a worthwhile way, [and I did it] strenuously
But right now I’m old. I would just like for it to be a cool/veteran kind of old, not withered and inactive.
Not traveling around setting out rules to annoy people

Compare it to a ripe fruit, all sweat and sour
The bitter flavor changes to be sweetness wetting the throat, joyfully.
All the hardness is gone, all the wants and desire,
All the concerns, cares, and ties are gone. But’s what’s not yet gone are [my] skills [I still have my mojo]*

I’m not indebted to this life. Right or wrong, so be it!
Because what is past and stored away will not return
I wish for the days that are remaining, however many there are, that they will be happy. No [more] whimsical risk-taking.
Sometimes listening to the sound of one’s own voice is good. But [most] importantly . . . don’t die just yet.

*Or more exactly, ” . . . but what is not yet gone is the ‘น้ำยา [nam yaa]'” “Nam yaa” word-for-word translates as “liquid medicine,” and covers Chili sauce, medicinal liquids, and effective solutions such as dishwashing liquid. As a metaphor, “น้ำยา [nam yaa]” means skills, ability, and expertise, and also has a sexual connotation. If you have no น้ำยา, you are impotent. Therefore, the English word “mojo” is a close substitute for “nam yaa.”
