Note: This is song contrasts “Truth/Reality” (kwam-jing) with “Beleif/Faith” (kwam-chêua). To me, as a Westerner, it sounds like song that beautifully summarizes the arguments for atheism. But recall that most Thais are Buddhist and Buddhism is not a theistic religion. So atheism isn’t quite the same thing in Thailand. Therefore, a better way to frame this might be: here are some very eloquent observations on the topic of “truth” and “belief” from a humanist and (presumably) a Buddhist.

ถึงแม่ความจริงเขาว่าเป็นสิ่งไม่ตาย
tĕung mâe kwaam jing kăo wâa bpen sìng mâi dtaai
Even though truth, they say, is something that doesn’t die
แต่คนทั้งหลายนก็ชอบอยู่กับความเชื่อ
dtàe kon táng lăai gôr chôp yòo gàp kwaam chêua
Still many various people like to live with faith
และมักทุ่มเทเวลา ทั้งหมดที่เหลือให้กับสิ่งนั้น
láe mák tûm tay way-laa táng mòt têe lĕua hâi gàp sìng nán
and are likely to devote all their remaining time to that thing

สุดท้ายความจริงจึงกลายเป็นสิ่งลอกลวง
sùt táai kwaam jing jeung glaai bpen sìng lôk luang
In the end, truth seems to be an illusion
เมื่อคนทั้งปวงเขาคิดว่าไม่สำคัญ
mêua kon táng bpuang kăo kít wâa mâi săm-kan
when no one one thinks its important*
ความเชื่อ ทั้งหมด บดบัง ความคิดความฝันที่ควรมี

All the faith eclipses the thinking and dreaming [one] should have

Every moment that the world revolves around itself
พาสรรพสิ่งและคนทุกคนเคลื่อนที่
paa sàp-pá-sìng láe kon túk kon klêuan têe
carrying everything and every person along,
ความจริงคือความสมดุล สมบูรณ์พอดี . . . เพื่อ คน
kwaam jing keu kwaam sŏm-dun sŏm-boon por dee . . . pêua kon
truth is a balanced, perfect fit . . . for people

คนคิดกันไปเมื่อโลกไร้ไดโนเสาร์
kon kít gan bpai mêua lôhk rái dai-noh-săo
People all thought when the world was without dinosaurs
พระเจ้าเท่านั้น คือผู้ยิ่งใหญ่คับฟ้า
prá jâo tâo nán keu pôo yîng yài káp fáa
[that] God is just a great person in the sky,
และเขียนความเชื่อ เป็นคำสอนศาสนาขึ้นมาเอง
láe kĭan kwaam chêua bpen kam sŏn sàa-sà-năa kêun maa ayng
And [they] wrote the faith as religious teachings arising from themselves

จากนั้นความเชื่อของชนทีเชื่อต่างกัน
jàak nán kwaam chêua kŏng chon tee chêua dtàang gan
From there, the beliefs of people who believe separate from each other
แก่งแย่งแข่งขันชิงว่าตัวดีตัวเก่ง
gàeng yâeng kàeng kăn ching wâa dtua dee dtua gèng
[They] compete, contest, and fight [over] what is good and excellent
เสียงกลองสงครามก็ได้เวลาบรรเลงสะบัดชัย
sĭang glong sŏng-kraam gôr dâai way-laa ban-layng sà-bàt chai
So let the war drums sound when it’s time to play for victory

ทุกวินาทีทีคนหมุนรอบตัวเอง
túk wí-naa-tee tee kon mŭn rôp dtua ayng
Every moment that people revolve around themselves
ก็มักหลงคิดว่าตนวิเศษว่าใคร
gôr mák lŏng kít wâa dton wí-sàyt wâa krai
[they] are likely to fall into thinking that they are more special than anyone
ในเรียนรู้ความจริงแท้ที่โลกเพื่อแผ่ไวแก่คน
nai rian róo kwaam jing táe têe lôhk pêua pàe wai gàe kon
It’s in the study of genuine truth that the world spreads out for a person

เมื่อความจริงมีอยู่ว่าคนเรา
mêua kwaam jing mee yòo wâa kon rao
While the truth is here, we people
หลงทางไปศรัทธาความเชื่อผิดผิด
lŏng taang bpai sàt-taa kwaam chêua pìt pìt
lose our way trusting in wrong beliefs
ถึงได้ลืมความรัก ความเอื้อเพื่อที่คน ควรมีให้แก่ กัน
tĕung dâai leum kwaam rák kwaam êua pêua têe kon kuan mee hâi gàe gan
To the point that we forget love and the charity that people should have towards each other
