English translation of lyrics

Note: This song is the title song from the 25th Anniversary album “Luuk Lung Kee Mow” (Child of the Drunken Uncle) and is the sequel to “Lung Kee Mow” (The Drunken Uncle), one of Carabao’s earliest hits. For those who know the song “Drunken Uncle” it really packs a punch. This punchline comes at the mention of the overpass, in a line that echos the most famous line from that first song. In the first famous song, Drunken Uncle famously dies under an overpass, or a bridge over a road.

kăo gèrt jàak kwaam rák kŏng krôp krua chon-ná-bòt
He was born from the love of a family in the countryside
chee-wít săen ran-tót tam hâi pôr … jàak bpai
An extremely depressing life made the father . . . take off.
mâe bòk pôr kâo grung mûng tam ngaan pêua hăa ngern
The mother told the father to go to the capital to aim for work to get money
pà-chern chôhk chá-dtaa nai meuang yài
Confront destiny in the big city
dtàe derm pôr mee wăng yang sòng kàao dtìt dtòr maa
At first the father had hope and was still contacting [home], sending news
pàan bpai lăai bpèe kwâa kàao mâi maa pôr ngîap hăai
More than many years pass, news doesn’t come. The father is silent, lost
bpen dtaai rĕu ráai dee yòo taang née fâo dtàe koi
[He’s] dead? Or doing terrible, or OK? [They] live this way, just watching and waiting
baang kráng mâe mèr loi láew sà-êun hâi
Sometimes the mother [seems] absent and distracted, then [she] sobs, and cries.

nêrn naan yêe sìp bpee jon bàt-née kăo bpen nùm
A long time [passes], 20 years, until now he is a young man.
chee-wít yang lûm lûm yang don don mâi bpai năi
Life is still up and down, not going anywhere
kâao bplèuak têe bplòok maa mee raa-kaa kâe dtôn tun
The unhusked rice [they] plant has value, is their only asset
bpai ngôk bpai pôk poon pôr káa gam-rai
When it grows up, it [just] amasses the merchant’s profit
têe din mâi mee lĕua gôm nâa gin bon têe châo
The land doesn’t have extra for eating after the rent
mâe bpùay prór sòhk sâo dâai mâi naan gôr jàak bpai
The mother gets sick because one can’t grieve a long time, so [one] must leave
lĕua kăo piang lam-pang făng sòp mâe wái kâang wát
Just him, by himself. [He] buries the mother by the temple
mee ngern jà maa jàt ngaan sòp hâi … yîng yài
[If] money would come, he would arrange a funeral . . . a great [funeral]

krai nŏr krai gan yang túk yâak
So who all do you think is still suffering?
yòo gin lam-bàak nai chon-ná-bòt wan née
[People] live and eat with difficulty in the countryside today
róo măi kon meuang mák koi ao bprìap
Do you know, city people are likely to slowly exploit you?
táng yăam táng yìat bplôn ching mâi lĕua chín dee
They all hate and despise you, rob and contest [until] you have nothing good left

mâi mee hùang dai dai gàp bâan râi gàp naa don
[He] doesn’t care anything about the farmhouse and dry [?] fields
lôok tohn próm rây rôn dtaam hăa pôr pôo sŏon hăai
The child of Tohn is ready to go off wandering around looking for [his] father, the person who vanished.
meuang grung gàp ee săan mee dtam naan dtòk tôt maa
The capital city and Isaan* have a history that has been handed down:
pôo kon tíng râi naa hăa chee-wít mài
People leave the farm to find a new life

lôok tohn máe koie hĕn bai nâa pôr nai kwaam jam
The child of Tohn even sometimes sees [his] father’s face in [his] memory
dern hăa cháo jà-ròt kâm kon man yúh meuang man yài
He walks around looking morning to evening. There are lots of people. The city is huge.
tăam krai gôr mâi róo glàp jông doo hŭa jà-ròt dteen
[He] asks people and they don’t know. The stare back, looking him over from head to toe.
ee săan kon bpêuan din glìn koh lon sàap kwaai
Isaan people are stained with earth and the smell of musty mud and buffalo

bpen kon mĕuan mĕuan gan dtàe glàp mee sên bàeng gân
[They] are all people, just the same. But there is a line separating them
mâi châi têe ter chăn dtàe ter nán maa jàak năi
It’s not a place [for] you and me. But you, there! Where do you come from?!
jàak din daen gan daan jàak chon chán yâak láe jon
[We are] from the same country as them, [but it’s] barred from the poor class
têe nêe kăo mâi sŏn kon mee ngern bpen yài
Here people ignore [you]. People have money and are eminent
chăn koie hĕn pôo tâo lung kêe mao kâang tà-nŏn
I used to see old drunken Uncle, along the side of the road
hàak krai póp lôok tohn chûay bòk tee pôr kăo dtaai
If anyone meets the son of Tohn, please tell him his father died
mâi dtông tîeow dtaam hăa jong gôm nâa sôo dtòr bpai
[That he] doesn’t need to be wandering around looking [for someone]. He must put his head down and struggle on.
chăn keu gam-lang jai kâam fâak hâi dâai … sà-paan loi
I can be moral support [for him] crossing over . . . the overpass.**

chee-wít nán mee sŏng fâak fâak kwaam túk yâak èek fâak kwaam sùk-kà-sà-baai
Life, it has two banks [of the river]. On one side hardship, and the other side happiness and contentment
yàa tór kŏr hâi jong òt ton òt ton tĕung wan fáa din hĕn jai
Don’t be downhearted. Please, you must endure. Endure until [you] arrive at the day that Heaven and Earth understand and empathize. ***

*Issan is the Northeast region of Thailand

**This line echoes the last, and most important line in the first song, “Lung Kee Mow”

***The last line is hard to translate. Endure until you arrive at the day that Heaven and Earth “hen jai,” which word-for-word means “see heart” and is usually translated “sympathize” or “empathize.” I am still not sure if Heaven and Earth understand and care about each other or about others.
