ลืมตามาชำเลืองดูโลก
leum dtaa maa cham-leuang doo lôhk
[Upon] opening their eyes to peek at the world,
เกิดมาเป็นทารกสามัญชนธรรมดา
gèrt maa bpen taa-rók săa-man chon tam-má-daa
[they] are born an infant who is an ordinary commoner
หากินกันจนหนังหน้าเหี่ยว
hăa gin gan jon năng nâa hìeow
[They] make a living until the skin of their face is withered
กว่าจะได้ขบเขี้ยว ก็ย่างวัยชรา
gwàa jà dâai kòp kîeow gôr yâang wai chá-raa
Before they crack a tooth, they step into old age [relatively comfortable retirement]
ฟันฟางจนจะหักหมดปาก
fan faang jon jà hàk mòt bpàak
Their poor teeth will all crack and be lost from their mouth
ตามัวจนจะมองไม่เห็น
dtaa mua jon jà mong mâi hĕn
Their eyes become blurry until they can’t see

The furrows of hardship

Think of the old person
เมื่อครั้งเป็นพ่อแม่ยังเลี้ยงดูลูกน้อย

back when they were a mother or father raising a small child
อดออมวันละนิดละหน่อย
òt om wan lá nít lá nòi
Each day saving a little [here and there],
เก็บสิบเป็นร้อยส่งลูกน้อยเล่าเรียน
gèp sìp bpen rói sòng lôok nói lâo rian
collecting 10, then 100 to send the small child to study
หวังเพียงเพื่อลูก ๆ เติบโต
wăng piang pêua lôok lôok dtèrp dtoh
hoping only for the child to grow up

ผู้เฒ่าเอย…จนเนื้อหนังหย่อนยาน
pôo tâo oie … jon néua năng yòn yaan
The poor old person . . . old until their flesh and skin is flabby
ถ้าสมบัติมโหฬาร ลูกหลานมาเอาใจ
tâa sŏm-bàt má-hŏh-laan lôok lăan maa ao jai
If they have immense wealth, their descendants come trying to please them
นะผู้เฒ่าเอย จนเนื้อหนังเหี่ยวย่น
ná pôo tâo oie jon néua năng hìeow yôn
It’s true, isn’t it: The person who is old until their flesh and skin is withered and wrinkled
ถ้าสมบัติมากล้น ยังพอมีคนเอาใจ
tâa sŏm-bàt mâak lón yang por mee kon ao jai
If their wealth is overflowing, that’s still enough to have people be trying to ingratiate themselves

.. ใครเลยเคยคิดถึงผู้เฒ่า
krai loie koie kít tĕung pôo tâo
Who ever thinks of the old person,
ที่เส้นผมหงอกขาวและดวงใจอาดูร
têe sên pŏm ngòk kăao láe duang jai aa-doon
with white hair and a grieving heart?
ค้ำจุนจนลูกหลานเติบใหญ่
kám-jun jon lôok lăan dtèrp yài
They support their descendants growing up
ต่างตอบแทนน้ำใจเพียงรดน้ำดำหัว
dtàang dtòp taen nám jai piang rót náam dam hŭa
But the kindness is repaid only by pouring water on the hands [a Buddhist blessing]*
สังคมทวีความดิ้นรน สอนคนให้คิดเห็นแก่ตัว
săng-kom tá-wee kwaam dîn-ron sŏn kon hâi kít hĕn gàe dtua
The growing struggles of society teach people to think selfishly
คนเฒ่าที่ฟันหักตามัว กลัวไม่มีคนไปเผา
kon tâo têe fan hàk dtaa mua glua mâi mee kon bpai păo
The old people with broken teeth and dim eyes are afraid they won’t have anyone to burn them [for their cremation rituals]
