หมอลำร็อค Mor-Lam Rock

By ยืนยง โอภากุล Yuenyong Opakul
รอยคำรณ Roi Kam Ron (1994)

Note: This song is genius: The Mor-Lam traditional musical style of Northeastern Thailand (a style which, in Western terms, most closely compares to rap), is glued onto 1950s Rock and Roll. Mor-Lam is similar to rap in that the words are more important than the melody. In Mor-lam the melody is flexible and follows the tones of the words, such that the melody seems to wander all around. The video is adorable. Even without understanding the words, the main message is clear from the melody and video (which is good because there is still one word not translated). This song is in the Isaan language, a dialect of Thai spoken in the Northeast, which is close to Lao. Half the words are different than standard Thai.

The whole album is wonderful and full of old-timey music. BUY IT HERE.

“Oh la-nor . . . nuan”

*Or possibly, “Yo  . . . Yo . . . Yo . . .  check it.” (he he . . .)
**The word “แอ่ว” means to “court”. He keeps saying he is courting the ladies with his song, so I translate this as “serenade” which means to court with a song.
*** I don’t know what this word means.
**** Literally, “I’m not relieved from liking your face”
