ยืนยง Yuenyong

From Album: โน พลอมแพลม No Problem (1990)
by ยืนยง โอภากุล Yuenyong Opakul, aka แอ๊ด คาราบาว Add Carabao

Note: Add Carabao’s real first name is “Yuenyong” and means “Long-lasting.” In Buddhism, one is advised to be continually aware of impermanence. So here Yuenyong Opakul (aka Add Carabao) is dismissing the meaning of his first name. It’s interesting because in this video he is in the prime of life, and near the beginning of his career. The theme of impermanence is a central point across 35 years of Carabao songs. Also check out an absolutely perfect song, “Mai Yuenyong,” from the middle of Add Carabao’s career, in which he says that Yuenyong will not yuenyong. Several of the songs he has posted to Facebook since turning 60 reflect on what it is like to grow old, including ระฆังชีวิต “Rakang Cheewit” (The Life Bell), อย่าเพิ่งตาย Yaa Peung Dtai (Don’t Die Just Now), and เพลงของกู Playng Kong Gu” (My Song).

*Thai2English transliterates ยืนยง as “yeunyong,” however there is no one correct system for transliterating Thai into English and Add Carabao himself spells his name “Yuenyong.”
** “ใช่ว่า” looks to an English speaker like it should mean “That’s correct that” but in fact it means “It’s not that”. And in this song, “ใช่ว่า” is further shortened to “ใช่”. As languages evolve useful shortcuts are taken and passed down. I am guessing that long ago “ไม่ใช่ว่า” got shortened to “ใช่ว่า” and this phrase worked even without the negative, so it was passed down.
***”Na” is a common beginning component of a Thai last name. For instant recognition of this, I translated to “Mc” in English, however “Na” means “from” and implies royal lineage, so a closer translation would be “Von”
**** He uses the same word “ให้” (hâi) for six sentence, and to preserve the parallelism as much as possible I translated it “causes me to be” 5X and “give” one time. But it actually serves various functions meaning “give/wants me to/makes it so I can.” If I wasn’t preserving parallelism, I might say: Mother gave birth to me. Father teaches me to create. The land gives what is sufficient. The river teaches me to struggle. The mountain teaches me to climb.

Additional note about possible origins of the song: This song may be an answer to a similar sounding song by Asanee and Wasan Chotikul called “ยินดีไม่มีปัญหา” (Mr. Happy No-Problem) that came out just one year before Add’s song, in 1989. It begins with a similar sounding shout and then first words translate, “My name is Mr. Happy No-Problem” (compare to “My Name is Yuenyong”). The whole “Mr. Happy” song goes on in a very upbeat and simplistic way about how everything is great and how thankful Mr. Happy No-Problem is be Thai and how Thais are taught to be good and respectful of their elders. In other words, it is a very strange rock and roll song. I don’t know if it is sincere or sarcastic. Note that the title of the Add Carabao solo album is No Problem (the title is in English). The Add Carabao “No Problem” song on this album is definitely sarcastic (I haven’t posted a translation of it yet.) Also when this “Mr. Happy No-Problem” song came out, Add Carabao has recently collaborated with Asanee and Wasan Chotikul, including on เดือนเพ็ญ “Duan Pen” and a song titled “ไม่เป็นไร” (“Never Mind/Doesn’t Matter/No Problem”), in 1986. Here is the “Mr. Happy No Problem” song by Asane and Wasan Chotikul for comparison with the “Yuenyong” song.
