หลงวัฒน์ Long Wat (Obsessed with [Another] Culture)

By คาราบาว Carabao
Album: หากหัวใจยังรักควาย Hak Hua Jai Yang Rak Kwai (If Your Heart Still Loves Buffalos) (1995)
This album, for the band’s 15th Anniversary was a comeback album and is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Buy it HERE at eThaiCD where you can shop in English.

Here is a translation of the official notes under the YouTube: “Around the year 1997, Thais started to copy the Western model more and more, whether its dancing or style of music, leading everyone to forget the charm of Thai things. So the government tried to campaign to have everyone love Thai things and use Thai things because they are afraid their decedents will be obsessed with culture until they forget their own culture.”

This song is interesting, because at first it sounds like western rock music with lyrics complaining about western and rap rock overtaking uniquely Thai genres. But if you pay closer attention, you’ll hear also hear an undercurrent of sam-cha (a Northern Thai musical style) that comes and goes, and it suddenly stands out alone in the sections where Khun Add sings: “I’m a little disappointed, I feel slighted/overlooked; when will Thai people come to love Thai things?”

It’s as if, even within this one song, the foreign and Thai musical styles are struggling with each other for dominance.

As to the mystery of an addictive Thai rock song complaining about rock not being appropriate for Thai people . . . don’t overthink it. This song was written to support a government policy, and Carabao has always written songs at the request of the government, beginning with “Made in Thailand.” I believe the goal has always been to make great enjoyable music that also has a chance to move society 1% in some desired direction.

*ramwong “is a slow round dance continuously moving in a circular manner, and incorporates graceful hand movements and simple footwork.” Off the top of my head, I would say that dancing to sam-cha music may also involve hand movements and simple footwork but with more jouncing around, often in some sort boisterous parade down the street. Or that is my impression.
