In my album review, I said about this song: “There are several great rock and roll tracks: . . . I’m more interested in วางดาบ “Wang Dap” (Put Down the Sword), which rolls and crashes, and sweeps me along, though I don’t know what it means.”  Well this is what it means.

English translation of lyrics

am-nâat wâat-sà-năa loi maa láew loi bpai
Destiny (power/good fortune) drifts here and there
doo yàang tâan tá-lai laa-má nán bpen dtua yàang
See, like the Dali Lama. There’s an example
koie sùt yôt yîng yài sùt táai gôr kâe bplòi waang
Once on the top and great, in the end, just set it down
săm-paa-rá bao baang bplòt bplong
Worn out baggage . . .  get rid of it

kŏng-jéu koie glàao wái krai chôp lên màak rúk
Confucius once told us: Those who like to play chess
yàa kít ao dtàe bùk jong pêua hŏn taang tŏi rúk
Don’t only think of attacking, so you must also have a way to retreat from an attack
nán bpen tam-má-châat kon mee tít-tì túk kon
It’s natural that people have their stubborn convictions
dtàe kon nĕua kon waang dàap
But the superior type of person sets down the sword

waang dàap waang jai waang dton rôn tŏi bpen tam-má-daa
[To] put down the sword, trust, and back down is normal
waang dàap nai u-bàyk-kăa bpen yòo tam-má-daa lám kâa gwàa sìng dai dai
Put down the sword in equanimity. To live as normal is more precious than anything.

kon tĕu gam-nèrt maa chee-wít săen tam-má-daa
People consider being born into life as so ordinary
láe mâi koie kít wâa jà nâa àt-sà-jan dtrong năi
And never think to be amazed about it
por tĕung kraao lóm bpùay mŏr bòk wâa bpen rôhk ráai
But as soon as they fall ill and the doctor tells them it’s a horrible disease
yàak hŭan keun glàp maa tam-má-daa
They want [everything] restored to normal

mêua chee-wít yang yòo jong rian róo jàk sùk
While we still have life, we need to learn to be happy
yàa dâai pêrm dtem túk dûay lâap yót gì-làyt dtan-hăa
Don’t increase all the suffering with fortune, rank, desire, and passion
kon gèrt maa châat nèung keu bprà-dìt gam lám kâa
People are born into one life. It’s a precious creation
chee-wít tam-má-daa waang dàap
Normal life puts down the sword

waang dàap waang jai waang dton rôn tŏi bpen tam-má-daa
[To] put down the sword, trust, and back down is normal
waang dàap nai u-bàyk-kăa bpen yòo tam-má-daa lám kâa gwàa sìng dai dai
Put down the sword in equanimity. To live normally is more precious than anything.

bàek nàk jà dtaai waang long láew bao sà-baai
(If it’s too heavy to bear, put it down! Then [you’ll feel] light and comfortable . . .)

prór sìng tam-má-daa tét jing láew keu sìng pí-sàyt
Because ordinary things, actually already are special things
têe sùt săm-ràp má-nút yàang raao raao
Really, really [special] for humans like us

waang dàap waang jai waang dton rôn tŏi bpen tam-má-daa
[To] put down the sword, trust, and back down is normal
waang dàap nai u-bàyk-kăa bpen yòo tam-má-daa lám kâa gwàa sìng dai dai
Put down the sword in equanimity. To live normally is more precious than anything.

(2X)

waang dàap waang jai waang dton rôn tŏi bpen tam-má-daa
[To] put down the sword, trust, and back down is normal
waang dàap nai u-bàyk-kăa bpen yòo tam-má-daa lám kâa gwàa sìng táng bpuang
Put down the sword in equanimity. To live normally is more precious than everything.*

*Another translator suggests that the refrain is more like “To be able to make putting down the sword, trusting, and backing down one’s normal response is more precious than anything.” But I think they are wrong.
