Taywadaa Taa Ja Yae (Deity, You’re Looking Terrible)

Lyrics and Music by แอ๊ด คาราบาว Aed Carabao
Welcome to Thailand (1987)
It looks like this album is unavailable right now, but you can REQUEST THIS ALBUM AT eThaiCD where you can shop in English!

Note: In this live version from long ago Khun Add messes up and forgets one line, so unfortunately, you don’t get to hear the deity’s heavy sigh. Nevertheless, it’s really cute. By the way, the word “เทวดา” “taywadaa”, which I translated “diety” could also be an “angel.” In any case, these beings are imagined looking much different than what Westerners imagine for their dieties. Here is what a tawadaa looks like:

หวย
. . .ho . . . huay
. . . ho . . . lottery . . .

tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Win or don’t win, doesn’t really matter
mâi châi rót raang rót may rót fai
[It’s] not the trolley, bus, or train
lót-dter-rêe man kèe mâi dâai
The lottery, you can’t ride it.
chaao bâan wăng ruay lên hŭay gan-yài
The villagers hoping to be rich are all swept into the lottery
tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Wining or not winning, doesn’t matter

chaao naa nâa daeng nâa dam
The farmers with red faces and black faces
meu têe gam kieow gìeow ruang kâao
[and] hands that grasp the sickle to harvest the ear of rice
túk òk túk jai bpùat ráao
are worried and pained
raa-kaa kâao man mâi kôi dee
The price of rice isn’t so good
jà hâi mee kwaam wăng taang dai
Where else will you have hopes
doo sòt săi tâo lót-dter-rêe
looking as bright as the lottery,
ngern tong máe mâi kôi jà mee
even if one doesn’t really have money,
grà-bìat grà-sĭan grà sèuak grà sŏn
if things are tight, you’re squeezed, stuggling along?

kwan-kwăai lâyk măai dèt dèt
Searching for the lucky number
Dtaam poi dtaam klét dtaam wát dtaam waa
according to the notepad, following secret tricks, [or] turning to the temple [asking the monks].
tay-wá-daa kŏr hâi chûay lôok dûay
Diety, come help your children!
tâa lôok tòok hŭay jà líang tay-wá-daa
If [your] children win the lottery [we]’ll take care of [you], Deity
jà chern maa dtâng góng wong lao
We’ll invite [you] and set up drinks for a drinking group
paa-dtêe kêe mao sŭan săy hay haa
A giggling, laughing drunk party.
kâao bplaa mŏo hèt bpèt gài
Rice, fish, pork, mushrooms, duck, chicken
pŏn màak râak máai táng gan chong gan-chaa pîap
betel nut, herbs, weed, and stuff. Lots of it!

tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Win or don’t, doesn’t really matter
mâi châi rót raang rót may rót fai
[It’s] not the trolley, bus, or train
lót-dter-rêe man kèe mâi dâai
The lottery, you can’t ride it
chaao bâan chôhk ráai tòok hŭay gin mòt
The unlucky villagers . . . winning the lottery consumes them entirely
tòok gôr châang · mâi tòok gôr châang
Win or don’t, doesn’t really matter

tay-wá-daa pàan maa póp hĕn
The diety passes by and sees
má-nút ùt-jaa-rá mĕn róng hăa tay-wá-daa
Filthy humans with stinking feces crying out for the diety
bpan-hăa man yòo dtrong năi
Just what is the problem
káp òk káp jai chaao râi chaao naa
laying on the hearts of the farmers?
bpan-hăa man yòo dtrong hŭay
The problem, it’s with the lottery!
won hâi rao chûay tòok hŭay sàk kraa
[They] plead for me to help [them] win the lottery just once
tay-wá-daa yùt kít nít nèung
The diety stops to think a minute
gôr bòn ram-peung ram-pan òk maa hér
And a muttering groan comes out: errrrr . . . [sound of a heavy sigh]

tay-wá-daa yúk née gôr lam-bàak
It’s difficult for deities in this age
òt òt yàak yàak jon dôi bpan-yaa
Impoverished until they don’t know what to do
wí-chaa aa-kom gôr lót tŏi
Knowedge of magic has also decreased and slowly faded away
prór mee mia nói loie mâi mee way-laa
Because of the mistresses. Consequently they don’t have the time
săng-kom tay-wá-daa yang yûng
Society and deities are still caught up in,
mua dtàe jà mûng yâeng gan bpen yài
obsessed with, competing to be most important.
tay-wá-daa lên dûay dâai măi
Can the diety also play?
lên hŭay gan yang ngai chûay sŏn tay-wá-daa
How can I play the lottery with you? Please teach me.

tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Win or don’t win, doesn’t really matter
mâi châi rót raang rót may rót fai
[It’s] not the trolley, bus, or train
lót-dter-rêe man kèe mâi dâai
The lottery, you can’t ride it
tay-wá-daa wăng ruay lên hŭay gan-yài
The diety hoping for riches gets all swept up in paying the lottery
tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Winning or not winning, doesn’t really mater

tay-wá-daa nâa daeng nâa dam
The deity, his face is red, his face is black
prór jai tà-lăm dtìt lót-dter-rêe
Because he loses balance addicted to the lottery
chaao naa kăo gôr bpai dee
The villagers they also do well
bpai mee ngaan tam dtà-wan òk glaang
They go off and have work to do in the Middle East
jon jai láe jon bpan-yaa
[I’m] baffled without any more ideas
bpen tay-wá-daa hâi tam ngai dâai
I’m a deity so how can I do it?
yòo bon fáa mâi mee-naa mee râi
I’m in the heavens, I don’t have fields
mee dtàe gôn mâyk gôr châo kăo yòo
I have only clouds, and rent them to live

kâa fai yang mâi jàai duang aa-tít
The electric bill I still haven’t paid to the sun
kâa náam yang dtìt nêe duang jan-traa
The water bill I still owe to the moon
chôhk chá-dtaa paa chee-wít lam-bàak
Destiny has brought a difficult life
tĕung gàp tòt nâa gàak jam nam chá-daa
To the point that [one] takes off the mask and pawns the chadaa [the pointed metal hat the diety is wearing in the pictures above]
bpan-hăa man yòo dtrong hŭay
The problem is with the lottery
gôr wăng jà ruay bpen sàyt-tĕe tay-wá-daa
[it makes one] want to be rich, to be a millionare diety
dtàe pàan maa mâi koie taeng tòok
But all this time and I’ve never guessed [the numbers] correctly
jon kâo grà-dòok grà-bpăo tay-wá-daa
till we reach the bottom of bag of the deity*

tòok gôr châang mâi tòok gôr châang
Win or don’t win. Doesn’t matter
mâi châi rót raang rót may rót fai
It’s not a trolley, bus, or train
lót-dter-rêe man kèe mâi dâai
You can’t ride the lottery
tay-wá-daa chôhk ráai tòok hŭay gin mòt
The unlucky diety . . . winning the lottery consumes him entirely

*Till we reach the bones of the bag of the diety.
