ค.ควาย ค.คน Kaw Kwai Kaw Kon (“K”-Buffalo, “K”-Person)

Album: ประชาธิปไตย Bprachaatipbpadtai (Democracy) (1986)
This album is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Buy the album HERE at eThaiCD, where you can shop in English.

Note: Explaining the title is a little difficult. The names of the letters in Thai include the standard example for that letter. Its as if, in English, we were to call our “Z” “Zee-Zebra” and our “B” “Bee-Ball.” Thai has duplicate letters making the same sound. There are several K’s, including K-Bottle, K-Buffalo, and K-Giant Bell. One additional kind of K, the old K-Person was phased out to simplify the language, and now “people” or “person” is spelled with the K-Buffalo, as if people have been demoted somewhat. They no longer have their own special letter, but have to share with the buffalo. This song is about the dignity of an ordinary working-class person.

*ไม่เคยคิด ไม่เคยฝัน
I never thought, I never dreamed [of things]
ไม่เคยสนใจ จะสนไปทำไม
I was never interested. And why would I be interested?
เกิดมาแล้วต้องทำงาน
I was born so I must work
อย่างที่ตั้งใจ ตั้งใว้ในหัวใจ
As I’ve determined to do, resolved in my heart

เกิดบนดิน โตบนดิน
I was born on the land, I grew up on the land
ไม่ใช่บนฟ้า เหมือนคนธรรมดา
Not on the sky. I’m like a regular person
อยู่ติดดิน ตีนติดดิน
I’m stuck on the ground. Feet stuck to the ground
ติดกับปัญหา ค่ายา ค่าอยู่ ค่ากิน
Stuck with problems: the cost of medicine, the rent, the cost of eating

ไม่เคยคิด ไม่เคยฝัน
I never thought, I never dreamed [of things]
ไม่เคยสนใจ จะสนไปทำไม
I was never interested. And why would I be interested?
เกิดมาแล้วต้องทำงาน
I was born so I must work
อย่างที่ตั้งใจ ตั้งใว้ในหัวใจ
As I’ve determined to do, resolved in my heart

ไม่โดดเด่น ไม่โด่งดัง
Not prominent, not famous
ไม่อยู่ค้ำฟ้า กล้าได้กล้าเสีย
Not immortal. I dare to take risks
ไม่ชอบเห่า ไม่ชอบเลีย
I don’t like to bark [at people below me], I don’t like to lick [the people above me]
ไม่หน้าตัวเมีย ค.คน ส้นตีนติดดิน
I’m not a bullshitter.* [I’m a] “K – Person”** with my heals on the ground.

เราไม่ถูกทุกอย่าง ไม่ผิดทุกอย่าง
I’m not right in every way, I’m not wrong in every way
ทำไปแก้ไป ยังมีคนที่เหนือกว่า
Just going along fixing things as I go. There are still people who are higher
ยังมีคนที่เหนือกว่า ไม่ออกหน้าออกตา อยู่ถมเถไป
There are still people superior to me. [I?] don’t flaunt it openly but [I?] have more than enough***

คุณผู้ชาย คุณผู้หญิง
Ladies and Gentlemen
ผมพูดจริง ๆ แบบลูกผู้ชาย
I speak the truth, like a real man
แหกปากร้องเพลงมันก็ยังง่าย
Blurting out a song, it’s still easy.
ไม่หนักเหมือนควาย ไถนา ทำนา
Not difficult like a buffalo plowing a field

[REPEAT ALL VERSES ABOVE 1X THEN CONTINUE)

คุณผู้หญิง คุณผู้ชาย
Ladies, Gentleman
คนมีความหมาย ที่ความอดทน
People are defined by their endurance
ที่ตัวดำ ๆ ทำงานอดทน
by their dark bodies working tirelessly
เขาก็คือคน เดินบนความจริง
They are also people walking upon truth

คุณผู้หญิง คุณผู้ชาย
Ladies, Gentleman
คนมีความหมาย ใช่ความร่ำรวย
People have meaning, not wealth
นิสัยดี ๆ ไม่หล่อไม่หล่อย
Well mannered, not handsome, not beautiful
พ่อแม่ไม่รวย แต่ขอให้รักกันจริง
[Their] mother and father not rich. But want to love each other truly

คุณผู้หญิง คุณผู้ชาย
Ladies, Gentleman
คนมีความหมาย ที่ความอดทน
People are defined by their endurance
ที่ตัวดำ ๆ ทำงานอดทน
by their dark bodies working tirelessly
เขาก็คือคน เดินบนความจริง
They are also people walking upon truth

*Literaly “หน้าตัวเมีย” is “the face of a bitch” but it means a cowardly liar, a bullshitter. It’s an insult used among men.
** ค.คน is pronounced “Kaw Kon” and is the Letter “K” with the example “Kon” meaning “Person.” But the official example for this kind of “K” is “Kwai” meaning “Buffalo.” And there used to be another, different “K” pronounced “Kaw Kon” that used the example “Kon” meaning “person,” but this kind of K is now obsolete; it was dropped from the alphabet because it was a duplicate sound. “Person” is now spelled with the same letter as “Buffalo.” So “Kaw Kon,” spelled with this type of K, is a little joke. See the longer explanation at the top of the page.
***The pronoun is missing so I have to guess it’s “I” who has more than enough and not the people who are superior.
