Hammer OR แฮมเมอร์

Add Carabao has said many times that he got his start writing for the Thai band แฮมเมอร์ Hammer, another Songs for Life band, which I believe got their name from the song “If I Had a Hammer.”

English-language Wikipedia under the entry “Aed Carabao” says*, “Aed produced the first album of the group Hammer in 1979. With this album, Hammer became known. In 1980, Aed composed the song ‘Teuk Kwaai Tui’ (‘Wild Buffalo’) for Hammer to record for their album Bpak Dtai Baan Rao (‘Our Southern Home’). That album vaulted Hammer to fame. Later, Aed worked with Hammer to come out with an album named Khanchanmueang with a folk-look thung musical style.”

Although the members of Hammer were born in Thailand, they are of Afghan descent. One of their most popular songs is ปักษ์ใต้บ้านเรา (“Our Southern Home”) and they are Muslim, so many people assume they are from the South of Thailand where most Muslim Thais live, but they are not. (I suppose this is similar to how Americans might assume John Denver is from Denver because of his name or because of “Rocky Mountain High”, or from West Virginia because of “Country Roads.”)

From Thai Wikipedia entry on แฮมเมอร์ (Hammer)

Quick Translation: “Hammer is a band of 4 siblings in the family Pratan, who are Muslim Thais of Afghan descent. And their mother is from Nakhon Nayok Province. Which causes people to mistakenly think that they are people of Southern Thailand. And Aaree Pratan is the lead singer, with songs released from 1979 to the present that are popular and many people know them, for example ‘Fly Away,’ ‘Our Southern Home,’ ‘Mother,’ and ‘I Am a Tree.’ They began with the name Hammer, which means a hammer which pounds and smashes all kinds of injustice and creates justice in society including participating in creating a civilization of humanity.”

I don’t know for sure which songs Add wrote for Hammer, other than to note that the last song on the first Hammer album is ถึกควายทุย (Tuk Kwai Tuey) (1978) which is also on the first Carabao album (1981). To me, the song ผีเสื้อ (Butterfly), also on the first Hammer album, sounds like a proto version of a later Carabao song The Hammer song แม่ (Mother) 1982 sounds like it may be a proto version of the Add Carabao song (If It Weren’t for Her, Today I’d Not Be Here) (2012).

Here are two YouTubes with popular Hammer songs. Their music is great:

Additionally, I think Add may be referring to Hammer’s popular song (Our Southern Home) in his song Yaak Dai Arai Tamai Mai Bok (If You Want Something, Why Don’t You Tell [Us]?). Why else would Add refer to the region as ปักษ์ใต้บ้านเรา “Our Southern Home” given that he is not from the South?

*Full disclosure, I expanded the Aed Carabao entry in English-language Wikipedia long ago by translating the entry in Thai, so that may be my translation.
