O e gau . . .
Oh Akha . . . [Akha is the name of a hilltribe]

kon bpàa kon doi rian nói bâang mâi dâai rian
Hilltribe people study a little. Some didn’t study.
hàt àan hàt kĭan rian róo ngoo ngoo bplaa bplaa
Practice reading, practice writing, learn a bit [learn “snake, snake, fish, fish”]*
túk wee túk wan tam ngaan àap ngèua dtàang nâa
Everyday work, face bathed in sweat
hăa gin lòr líang gaa yaa dtaam bprà-săa kon bpàa kon doi
Make a living, find nourishment, follow the way of the hilltribe people
bpen nùm bpen săao man ngăo hâi kít òk reuan
Being a young man [or] women, it’s lonely and makes one think about about marriage:
maa yòo bpen pêuan chûay gan hăa pèuak hàak loi
Come stay be friends, help each other find taro [metaphor for helping each other work]
líang mŏo líang măa tăang bpàa tam râi lêuan loi
Raise pigs, raise dogs, mow the forest, work the rice field [undertake slash and burn agriculture]
sâang wí-maan bon doi bpen nók nói nai rang jon jon
Create a paradise on the mountain. Be a few birds in the poor nest

dtàe por mêua waan bpá man ter plan bplían-bpăi
But yesterday when I met you, it changed
âi nùm nâa săi mâi koie bpàet bpêuan din klon
The rich boy never touches dirt
jàak meuang grung glai kwàk kwài bpai dûay rót yon
Far away from capital, where there are a lot of cars going back and forth,
wí-maan kŏng kon jon jon tòok chîng tòok chon dûay rót four wheel
The paradise of the poor people is crashed by the four wheel trucks

[This whole next verse is sung with a Hilltribe accent (no ending consonants)]***

bpai yòo grung tâyp sàk kam mâi koie yom bòk
[You] went to stay in Bangkok [and] weren’t willing to tell me one word [about it].
rĕu dohn kăo lòk hâi long jàak doi dtaam maa
Or were [you] tricked by him to come down from the mountain?
bpai yòo grung tâyp [Kru The] jâo dtua mâi koie yom laa
When [you] moved to Bangkok, you never said goodbye
săao doi bâan bpàa pôot laa sàk kam mâi mee
[The] young hilltribe woman didn’t give a word of goodbye.

krai lâo jà sŏn kon jon kon doi kon kăo[
Who will care about the poor people and hilltribe people?
tĕung mee poom mi lam-nao dtàe รบัด bprà-chaa chon mâi mee
Though they have a native district, [they] don’t have an ID card
pók yaa tan jai eo wái taen bai kàp kèe
Carry [medicine/drugs?] tucked away instead of a driver’s license
rót yon gôr yang mâi mee rót may gôr maa mâi tĕung
Cars [they] don’t have yet. Buses don’t go all the way out there.

doi doi doi dtâng nâa dtàe koi koi koi
Mountain, mountain, mountain still just wait, wait, wait
koi koi koi nóng naang keun doi doi doi
Wait, wait, wait for her return up the mountain, mountain, mountain

*To speak “ngu ngu plaa plaa” (literally “snake snake fish fish”) is to be able to speak a smattering of something.

***In the Hmong language, for instance, there are no ending consonants, so the Hmong may pronounce “Krung Thaep” (Bangkok) as “Kru Thae.” You can hear Khun Aed sing “Kru Thae” and all the other words with no ending consonants.
