Note: The album Wanipok, appearing two years before the band became hugely famous, is a classic and pretty much perfect. You should BUY IT HERE from the friendly people at eThaiCD, where you can shop in English.

Below is an excellent cover of “Buat Na Fai” (“Ordainment Before the Pyre”) By Poke Mujchasoi:

wan têe chăn laa jàak bâan maa nám dtaa mâi koie dtòk din
The day that I left home to come [here], I never shed a tear
kam kŏng pôr yang wâew dâai yin · wâa lôok rák maa ná tam ngaan
The words of my father I still hear in the distance: “Dear Child, work!”
krôp krua kŏng rao nán kon jon
My family, we were poor.
kàt-sŏn chông taang tam gin mâi mee péun naa péun din
Lacking a way to make enough to eat. We didn’t have land or fields.
mee sáp sĭn ao bpai jam-nong ao bpai jam nam
The possessions [we] have, [we] take them to pawn them.

chăn jeung ráp pìt chôp tăa-ná lôok chaai kon dtoh
I am therefore responsible as the oldest son
pêua bprà-tang kwaam òt soh kŏng krôp krua têe àp chăo
To provide for the hunger of my family that is withering
kêun rót fai … kâo grung kâo grung mûng tam ngaan
I get on a train . . . enter the capital [Bangkok], enter the capital aiming to work
wăng wái èek mâi naan jà sòng ngern glàp maa líang krôp krua
I hope that it won’t be long before I can send money back to provide for my family

ngaan têe tam chăn bàek hăam wan yang kâm
The work that I do is to carry [things] on my shoulder all day long
chăn piang grà-tam jon chin chaa
I just perform [this task] until I get used to it
săen nèt nèuay néua dtua mêuay láa
[being] so weary, achy, and exhausted
hŭa jai yang glâa pá-yaa-yaam
[My] heart still bravely tries
sŏng meu mee raeng sĕe lêuat daeng kêm kôn
My two hands have strength, my blood is rich red
bpen kon mâi kít têe yôr tór kong èek mâi naan gern ror
[I’m] a person who never things of giving up. I probably won’t have to wait much longer.
pôr jăa pôr jà dâai ráp ngern
Dad . . . * Dad, you’ll receive the money.

tam ngaan bpen raai wan chăn grà-mèt gin
I’ve worked every day, economizing on what I consume
ao bpai sài om sĭn ruam wái sîn deuan
I’ve put all my savings away till the end of the month
dee … chăn dee jai prûng-née jà tĕung sîn deuan
Good! . . . I’m happy. Tomorrow will be the end of the month
dee … chăn dee jai mee jòt măai kĭan maa jàak krôp krua
Great! . . . I’m happy! There’s a letter that’s come from my family!

rao dtâng kwaam wăng wái piang baang sìng
I’ve set my hopes on only a few things
gôr maa mee an bpen bpai
And here comes this disasterr
kôr kwaam têe kĭan nai jòt măai
The message written in the letter:
sòng kàao maa wâa pôr sîn jai
It sends news that Dad has passed away.
pôr maa dtaai long prór bpen wan-ná-rôhk
Dad has died because he had tuberculosis
rôhk kŏng kwaam òn ae jàak tôi kam kŏng mâe
An illness, from mom’s words,
wâa rao yâe prór mâi mee ngern séu yaa
that we’re in a terrible way because there is no money to buy medicine.

túk săng-kăan kŏng má-nút têe gam-nèrt maa
Everyone who is born,
lúan dtàe bpràat-tà-năa gin yòo sùk-kà-sà-baai
all desire to eat and to live happily and comfortably

chăn . . . mâi kâo jai gohn hŭa kâo bùat nâa fai
I . . . I don’t understand. I shave my head and ordain before the pyre*
pók kwaam .. mâi kâo jai · ao wái bpai tăam prá tam
I pocket my nonunderstanding away and go ask for Buddha’s teachings

[Last two lines 4X]

*He’s calling to his father in his thoughts.
** He is ordaining as a monk at his father’s cremation ceremony so his father can be free of his karma and be reborn quickly to a better life.
