Note: Another translator, who is a native Thai fluent English speaker, has a new, suprising suggestion for the translation of “โกยลิเก”: it translates as “play action,” a term from American football! A play action is when the offense fakes a running play, but it turns out to be passing play. This makes alot of sense for the song: As the Americans try their tricks from American football in the field of international trade and business, the Thais are urged to treat this competition as a Thai kickboxing match. The notes from the album cover state that this album speaks about the American government restricting its quota of textiles coming Thailand. Also, in my own memory of that time, Thais were anxiously following the progress of a U.S Farm Bill through the US congress because higher subsidies on U.S. rice would lower the international price of rice and hurt Thai farmers. Meanwhile, I can tell you that few Americans even knew that rice was grown in Texas (I didn’t know), let alone that it was a Thai strain of rice with disputes about patents and subsidies and all the rest of the controversy [see the footnotes]. So the song is correct that the U.S. was paying no attention to the complaints coming from the countries affected by its trade policies and business practices.

*This is an accusation that many Thai people agree on: That the US unfairly obtained a patent on Thai rice by inviting Thais to study and do their research here.
** With a Thai pronunciation, the words “doc” and “dog” sound the same [because these ending constants are unaspirated]; so it’s a pun.
*** Chantana is a character from a song “ฉันทนาที่รัก” (“Darling Chantana”) and she is a worker in a textile factory.
**** Another translator explains that the phrase “เดิมพันติดปลายนวม” [literally, the wager attached to the glove] is idiomatic and refers to the amount of money that both sides agree to wager on a boxing match. These days ติดปลายนวม [attached to the glove] (without เดิมพัน) is used to mean “an thing or condition attached to a particular event.” From the context, we can guess that “kickbacks” are the attached things/condition that makes one unable to speak out publicly.
