Note: Eed Opakul is not in the band Carabao, but when the news broke this week that mass graves of Rohingya people had been found in Thailand, I asked P’Eed if I could use a song he had already written in December 2014 about the plight of the stateless Rohingya people. Eed Opakul is a gifted Songs for Life artist and the first musician I know of to write about this tragedy. He is also Aed Carabao’s twin. And this is what it is like to be a Songs-for-Life archivist: As I was about to go live with the song translation at CarabaoinEnglish, Aed Carabao wrote a song that specifically addresses the most recent events. So . . . below is Eed Opakul’s song, which focuses on the underlying problem that no state claims the Rohingya even though they have lived in Burma (Myanmar) for at least 150 years. Here is Aed Carabao’s song by the same title.

And here is an International Version of Eed Opakul’s song in Rhyming, SINGABLE English.

Here you can read the HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH REPORT on human trafficking of Rohingya in Thailand.

The song starts 25 seconds into the video (after explaining that the Rohingya are stateless and suffering miserably):

ไม่มีดินแดนเดิน มีแต่เรือลอยลำ
mâi mee din daen dern mee dtàe reua loi lam
[They] don’t have a land to walk on, only boats adrift
rây kâo maa kwài kwáa kwaam bpen kon
Wandering, clutching onto humanity
in-dia mâi ao bang-klaa-tâyt mâi sŏn
India doesn’t want them. Bangladesh doesn’t care
pá-mâa kàyn kâa tâep bpêe bpòn
Burma murders and almost stamps them to dust

hàeng lôhk má-nút ná chaai kòp daen tai
In our world, right now, they are at the border of Thailand
tòok gàk kăng wái ror plàk-săi lâi sòng
Confined away [in camps in Burma], waiting to be pushed out.
mòt sîn hŏn taang bpai mâi sîn sùt kwaam bpen kon
Out of paths to walk down, one loses their humanity
máe rái săn-châat roh-hing-yaa
Even lacking a nationality. Rohingya!

Rohingya Ro-Ro Rohingya Ro-Ro-Ro Rohingya
Rohingya Ro-Ro Rohingya Ro-Ro-Ro Rohingya

yang mee pàen din dern mee lăng kaa klum hŭa
[We] have a land to walk on, a roof over our head
Króp sŏng meu sŏng táo gâao yâang bpai
Having two hands and two feet, we move on
chee-wít dtòp àp ngaan gaan mâi săm-rèt
Life throws up a road block. Our work won’t succeed.
bpen nêe bpen sĭn yang hăai jai
[So now] we’re in debt. We still breathe.
