ตะวันตกดิน (Dtawan Dtok Din) The Sun Sets

I translated this song for it’s novelty value. To an American, it is sounds REALLY odd that these dark lyrics (reminding us that we could die tomorrow) are matched with this silly melody with parts sung in falsetto. I finished my translation and was still totally confused. Then a fellow translator reminded me that this could be another song about impermanence, or as my grandmother likes to say, “Tomorrow isn’t promised to us.” That seems right in the context of other Carabao songs, for example “Kon La Fun,” an infectiously upbeat song which reminds us we have just one life to live. Another consideration: the album Dtawan Dtok Din has at least one very political song. The warnings about greed leading to one’s downfall could be political.

ชีวิตคนเราก็มีแค่นี้ คล้ายตะวันขึ้นแล้วก็ตกลง
chee-wít kon rao gôr mee kâe née kláai dtà-wan kêun láew gôr dtòk long
The life of us people is just this here. Similar to how the sun rises then falls [sets].*
ดูให้ดีอย่าให้ตกส่งเดช ถ้าตกลงน้ำคงลำบากที่จะงม
doo hâi dee yàa hâi dtòk sòng dàyt tâa dtòk long nám kong lam-bàak têe jà ngom
Watch out! We can’t have [it] fall haphazardly. If it falls into the water, is will be difficult to find.
ตะวันตกดิน อีกไม่นานก็คงจะโผล่ขึ้นมา
dtà-wan dtòk din èek mâi naan gôr kong jà plòh kêun maa
The sun falls into the ground . . . Not too long after, it will probably come back up
ตะวันตกน้ำ น้ำจะพาให้ไฟดับ ไม่กลับคืน
dtà-wan dtòk nám nám jà pâi [paa hâi]** fai dàp mâi glàp keun
The sun falls in the water, the water will put out the fire. It won’t come back
ตื่นขึ้นมาก็ไม่อาจพบตะวัน ความฝันก็ลบเลื่อน
dtèun kêun maa gôr mâi àat póp dtà-wan kwaam făn gôr lóp lêuan
[You] wake, get up, and maybe don’t meet the sun. Your dreams will also fade out

ชีวิตใครคล้ายดั่งตะวันตกน้ำ
chee-wít krai kláai dàng dtà-wan dtòk nám
The life of someone is similar to the sun falling into the water
คนไม่ใช่ปลาจะหายใจได้ไง
kon mâi châi bplaa jà hăai jai dâai ngai
People aren’t fish. How’re they going to breathe?
ดูให้ดีก่อนจะก้าวย่างเดิน
doo hâi dee gòn jà gâao yâang dern
Watch out before you step into [it] walking
ถ้า [มัว?]เพลิดเพลิน มักจะตกน้ำตาย
tâa [mua] plêrt-plern mák jà dtòk nám dtaai
If you are absorbed in enjoying [the day], you are likely to fall in the water and die

[You] wake, get up, and maybe don’t meet the sun. [Your] dreams will also fade out

คือ..มันอย่างนี้นะครับ มันก็ไม่มีอะไรมาก
keu .. man yàang née ná kráp man gôr mâi mee a-rai mâak
So it’s like this, OK? It doesn’t have a lot of anything
ไม่ต้องไปคิดมาก คือถ้าตกลงดินนะครับ
mâi dtông bpai kít mâak keu tâa dtòk long din ná kráp
You don’t need to think about it much: if [you] fall to the ground
อาจจะบาดเจ็บนิดหน่อย แต่ถ้าตกลงน้ำนะครับ
àat jà bàat jèp nít nòi dtàe tâa dtòk long nám ná kráp
Maybe [you] get hurt just a little. But if [you] fall into the water . . .
น้ำอาจจะท่วมปอด..ตายโหงกันหมดเลยละครับท่านครับ
nám àat jà tûam bpòt .. dtaai hŏhng gan mòt loie lá kráp tâan kráp
The water might flood [your] lungs . . . [you]’d die violently and be finished, Sir.

สุภาษิตได้ขีดเขียนคำคม
sù-paa-sìt dâai kèet kĭan kam kom
The proverb [proverbs?] penned the saying
ความลมจ่มมักมากจากความโลภโม
kwaam lom jòm mák mâak jàak kwaam lôhp moh
So much sinking comes from greed [?]
อำนาจเงินอาจทำให้คนใหญ่โต
am-nâat ngern àat tam hâi kon yài dtoh
Power, money might make a person influential
แต่ใหญ่แค่ไหนดวงตะวันยังตกดิน
dtàe yài kâe năi duang dtà-wan yang dtòk din
But however big, the sun will still set

**Comparing what he is singing to what is written, I conclude that this is one of those rare contractions: พาให้ paa hâi -> pâi
