Tuk Kwai Tuey (Tuk, The Buffalo with Unusual Horns [Part 1])

Add Carabao
Album: ขี้เมา Kee Mao (The Drunken Uncle) (1981)
This album is the first Carabao album, released before the band was famous; it is HIGHLY recommended for fans. Newcomers should probably start with a later album. BUY IT HERE at eThaiCD.com, where you can shop in English.

Note: This simple song is the title song off the very first Carabao album, 4 albums before “Made In Thailand,” before the band was famous. The tune is unremarkable and the whole thing sounds like an ancient artifact because of the poor recording. However the song is important, not only as the title song of the very first Carabao album, but as the first song in a long-running Tuk Kwai Tuey series of songs (10 so far), which runs across successive albums. Also, this song first appeared on an album by the band แฮมเมอร์ Hammer that came out in 1980, when Add was writing songs for Hammer. The success of the songs he wrote for that album inspired Add to write for himself.

English translation of lyrics

nòhk lêuat chaao naa màn tam naa
Nohk has the blood of a farmer, [he] persists in farming
bon têe naa piang lék nói … kŏng bpòo yâa dtaa yaai
On the farm there isn’t much . . . It was his ancestors’
tèuk bpen kwaai tui … lui tàak tăi
Tuk [the name means ‘Wild”] was a buffalo with short twisted horns . . . ploughing along
yòo gàp nòhk maa nom naan … săng-kăan rêrm rûang roi
He lived with Nohk for a long, long time . . . [until Tuek] started to decline physically
sŏng pêuan plík pĕun naa maa bpen ruang
The two friends turn over the field to be ears of rice grains

nèut kon mee ngern mee ngern tun
Neut, a person who has money, has capital,
mee rohng ngaan mee rohng man líang lôok nóng taen kwaai
has factories, and buildings. Provides for underlings instead of for buffalo
gìt-jà-gaan dtâng rohng man kráng săm-kan
The business is setting up a factory/building. It’s an important time.
kóp kít gan wâa kuan kà-yăai jà hăa gam-rai pêrm poon
He conspires with others, saying [we] should expand to try to increase [our] profits

nèut jeung hâi maa … wâa nòhk jăa pûak chăn maa .. kŏr séu têe
Nuat therefore has [someone] come over . . . say to Nohk sweetly, “My people are coming, I’d like to buy this place please.”
nòhk dâai fang mâi kŏr yin dee jà òt dtaai … hàak kăai têe
Nohk hears this and isn’t happy. He will starve to death . . . if he sells the place
jà mâi mee têe taang tam gin
He will have no way to eat

nèut dâai fang kwaam
Neut gets the message
dang tôi kam dtaam lôok nóng man chée jaeng
as the subordinate explains it
wâa jâeng née mŏr nêe dtông sĭa jai
And tells him: This guy will be sorry!
láew wan nèung nòhk dtèun non dton rûng cháo
Then one day Nohk wakes up in the morning
dtrà-dtriam dtua bpai tam naa man gôr dtông dtòk jai
Gets ready to go work the field, and he is shocked

wâa oh ói … jâo kwaai tâo
He says, Oh! Ow! You old buffalo!
pêuan pôo chûay pòn raeng rao
My friend, my labor-saving helper!
krai tam jâo tĕung piang née
Who did such a thing to you?!
jâo tòok bèua jon dtaai kaa têe
You’ve been poisoned to death!
gaan grà-tam rái kwaam bpraa-nee
This action is heartless!
láew jà mee krai chûay nòhk tam naa
Now who will help me work the fields?
