(Maai Pai) Bamboo

Lyrics by แอ๊ด คาราบาว Aed Carabao ( ยืนยง โอภากุล Yuenyong Opakul);

Wanipok (The Beggar) (1983)

Note: BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE SINGABLE ENGLISH VERSION. It came out amazing without losing anything. The album Wanipok, appearing two years before the band became hugely famous, is a classic and pretty much perfect. You should BUY IT HERE from the friendly people at eThaiCD, where you can shop in English.

English translation of lyrics

nai dèuk sà-ngàt mee săai fŏn bproi bpraai
In the night, there is rain sprinkling
chăn yìat râang gaai tôt bpai dtaam săeng deuan
I stretch my body following the moonlight
nai sòht bprà-sàat wâew sĭang fŏn bpen pêuan
In my ear, the muffled sound of rain keeps me company,
yám dteuan tĕung keun wan têe pàan maa
reminding me of days and nights gone by
hŏi hŭan săm-nuan kruan krâm lam-nam kŏng klùi máai pài
Bringing a lamenting phrase from the bamboo flute
lór ban-layng playng jàak níw têe prom praai
[I] tease a [new] song from the fingers that flutter,*
jàak fŏn têe bproi bpraai jàak jai têe aa-won … tĕung ter
from the rain that sprinkles, from the heart that cares . . . about you

sĭang klùi gleun glòp lóp săm-niang rôp gaai
The sound of the flute swallows, covers, erases sounds all around
săeng jan grà jaai òhp péun din dieow gan
The moonlight spreads to embrace the one ground
bplông pài pĭw née mee sèup săai săm-pan
This section of bamboo has a connected origin
gèrt dtàe gor rûam gan naan maa
Born in one clump, a long time together
làe pôo kon túk chon túk chán gôr săm-pan dang klùi máai pài
And people, every single one, are related like the bamboo flute [is related to the other stalks]
keu raeng lom plíw pàan lam máai
It is wind power fluttering over the stalk of wood
mee lom jàak raeng gaai mee pài jàak gor ruam rûam gan
The air from one’s own energy. The bamboo from one clump
ruam gan ruam gan ruam gan ruam gan
combined, combined . . . together

bpen sĭang klùi têe wèet wĭw taeng jai
It is the sound of the flute whistling a heart-piercing melody**
bpen sĭang klùi têe gèuk gông dtà-gohn glai
It is the sound of the flute that calls out, reverberates far
bpen sĭang klùi têe yòo nĕua kwaam dtaai
It is the sound of the flute that transcends death,
kwaam ngăo nai duang jai kwaam túk nai reuan gaai
the loneliness in the heart, the suffering in the body,
kwaam chûa ráai nai dtua dton an pá-sù-ton gôr sàap sŏon
the evil in oneself, and the ground also vanish

bpen sĭang klùi têe wèet wĭw taeng jai
It is the sound of the flute that whistles a heartfelt melody
bpen sĭang klùi têe gèuk gông dtà-gohn glai
It is the sound of the flute that calls out, reverberates far
bpen sĭang klùi têe yòo nĕua kwaam dtaai
It is the sound of the flute that transcends death
chăn maa fàak ao wái chăn maa fàak ao wái
I come and deposit it safely, I come deposit it safely
I come and deposit it safely . . . in your heart.

*”ล้อ” can mean “tease” or to do something repeatedly, so this line could also be translated “repeatedly playing a song from the fingers that flutter.” “tease” is more poetic, so I went with that.
**”แทงใจ” or “taeng jai” literally, means ‘stab through the heart’. Figuratively, it refers to something perfectly (and often painfully) matching your feeling and can also mean “to be on the same wavelength [with someone else]” (the understanding behind my rhyming English translation of this song).
