Note: The fact that Add Carabao decends from recent Chinese immigrants to Thailand is important background for understanding his songs. By his own account it helps explain his sympathy for refugees. (“You can’t choose your birth.”) This video is from the concert “Person with Harmonica” คอนเสิร์ต คนกับเม้าท์ and the pictures show a then-recent trip to China. His Chinese relatives invited him to go learn about his roots.

เมื่อแดนดินแม่กันดาร
When the motherland is arid and lacking
จิตวิญญาณของก๋งล่องลอย
grandfather’s spirit drifts along.
เก็บเสื่อหมอนของใช้นิดหน่อย
[He] gets [his] mat, pillow, and little things.
เจ้านกน้อยโผบินจากรัง
The Little Bird soars away from his nest.
ฝ่าคลื่นลมภูเขา ทะเล
Braves the gusts of wind, mountains, oceans.
ขึ้นสำเภาที่ใกล้จะพัง
Gets in a boat [a sampao or junk] that is nearly collapsing,
สร้างชีวิตใหม่โพ้นฟากฝั่ง
Creates a new life beyond the other shore
คือความหวังของจีนสยาม
It’s the hope of Chinese-Siamese.

เช้าจรดเย็น หนักเข็ญเท่าใด
From morning to evening, however much difficult suffering
ขอข้าวเพียงหนึ่งชาม
Just asking for one bowl.
ข้าวและน้ำที่กินทุกคำ
The rice and water that [one] has every night
จดจำสำนึกคุณ
Keeping in mind a sense of gratitude

หลากธรรมเนียมหลายที่มา
Overflowing with customs of many origins
กี่ภาษาเชื้อชาติใดๆ
However many languages, whatever national origins,
ฟากฝั่งฝายังผืนดินไทย
the firm bank is still the Thai land.
ย่อมเป็นไทย ผองไทยทั้งสิ้น
[They] will naturally become Thai, wholly, entirely Thai.

เกิดจากแดนแคว้นเมืองไกล
Born in a faraway land
หากวันใดไร้สิ้นชีวิน
On whatever day that I die
อยากฝากกายวิหคพลัดถิ่น
I would like to entrust the body of the bird that falls to the ground
ใต้แผ่นดิน บ้านเมืองเห่งนี้
Under the ground of this homeland.
