This perfect live version of “Made in Thailand” was performed in the United States over 30 years ago, right after Carabao shot to superstardom in Thailand. I was in Thailand at the time and watched clips of that US concert on the news. (Thierry Mekwattana sings the English version; then Add Carabao sings the Thai version.)
“Made in Thailand” is a song that is aimed directly at a specific time, so several other versions of “Made in Thailand” address the situation in other decades. But usually, in live concerts, one or two lines of original “Made in Thailand” is switched up to keep the song fresh.
This version begins in English, so I won’t translate the English, some of which is hard to hear and some of which doesn’t make sense to me, but it is a criticism of American militarism.
“Made in Thailand” is the song that literally stopped me on the street over 30 years ago in Thailand as I was heading to my bus stop. I thought it was the greatest thing ever and asked what it was so I could go buy the album, which I instantly did as soon as I got off my bus. “Made in Thailand” was what I googled after the Internet and was invented so I could find my once favorite band (up popped a rap version of the song). “Made in Thailand, from the USA” was a song I once was startled to hear blasting from my son’s room, even though we no longer owned that song in a playable form. (He had heard it many times on my cassette tapes when he was little and looked it up and downloaded it onto his i-Pod.)
If you want to hear some version of “Made in Thailand” from the USA, and see the living legend that is Add Carabao, you have two more chances!!!
